Personal Statement
Growing up in Maine, everyone plays some form of hockey at least once. I originally started in ice hockey, but soon started pursuing equestrian sports and eventually left ice hockey due to the cost-prohibitive nature of both sports. Equestrian sports can be scored as teams, but truly an individual sport between horse and rider and I longed for a team atmosphere. I started field hockey in third grade with an after school recreation program and it just clicked. It was the team sport I craved.
Once in middle school, I was able to play against outside teams which unlocked my fiercely competitive nature on the field. Currently, in high school, I have been a varsity starter since freshman year. During freshman year, I would play back-to-back varsity and junior varsity games due to low membership and served as a captain for JV games. In my sophomore year, my team made it to playoffs for the first time in five years! I vividly remember playing the quarter-final in the snow and playing on turf (my small rural school plays strictly on grass) for the semi-final. We didn’t advance to finals but did win the sportsmanship award. These experiences taught me grit and perseverance. As a sophomore, I was awarded the Iron Red Riot Award for maintaining high honor roll while participating in three seasons of sports. As a junior, I was awarded the Unsung Hero Award for leadership. I am always looking to better myself as a student and athlete by working smarter and not harder. I’d like to challenge my skills academically in the classroom and athletically on the field hockey field at the collegiate level.
