Personal Statement
As an individual, I have always enjoyed being active and trying many new sports and activities. Since the age of 5, I have run in kids races and played recreational sports until school sports began. I don’t shy away from new adventures and that has led me to participate in track, cross country, soccer, field hockey, and indoor field hockey. Of the many sports I have played and learned, field hockey is by far my favorite and the place where I feel most able to make a difference for the team. Whether in soccer or field hockey, I prefer to be a defender. I do not back down, and even when younger and a smaller player, I was not afraid to go against a much bigger player. My childhood soccer coach often referred to me as the “little bulldog” – at that time I was the smallest and youngest player on the team, but I was the one who would stick with the person I was defending, no matter the size difference. This determination and competitive nature has served well in school also. I work very hard for all of the grades I have earned. Although it would be easier to take regular or honors classes, I tackle the AP or dual enrollment classes when available. I believe that taking harder classes will give me a head start in college curriculum.
A challenge in life that has made me more resilient and adaptive was my parent’s separation when I was in fifth grade. We moved an hour away from the only home I had every known just as I was entering middle school. Not only was I dealing with my parents separating, I had to learn a new city, new school, and make all new friends. Although this was not an easy time for me, it taught me that I can overcome the greatest of challenges and that having a positive attitude makes anything seem more attainable. I try to take change in stride now, understanding that it is growth and seeing the best in all situations. My friends and teachers see the carefree, happy, smiling person that I am when off of the field, and my coaches see the competitive fearless player on the field. I have shared a laugh with many of my coaches about how sweet and competitive I am simultaneously. I am kind towards everyone I meet with a smile on my face, yet fierce on the field. Sportsmanship is extremely important to me. Although I play aggressively, I am always courteous to the competition and referees. Monacan field hockey has taught me the importance of thanking the referees after every game. I feel like my life is very balanced and I have learned to juggle school with advanced classes, sports, and while working a part time job.
Looking ahead to college, I hope to have the opportunity to again prove my ability to play field hockey while working towards my degree. At this time I am undecided on a major but have a broad spectrum of interests. Ideally, I would prefer a school on the East coast and am more interested in playing time than the size of the school. As mentioned above, I have learned to adapt and embrace change, so I feel confident that I will adjust well to any type of school setting.
