Hello, I am Alexis Lee. I’m a rising sophomore at Jamestown High School (JHS) in Williamsburg, Virginia and I am a captain on the Varsity Field Hockey team.
Catch me in action: I am playing with Focus Field Hockey U16 at Shooting Star Thanksgiving Tournament in Midlothian, Virginia from November 29-December 1.
I have always been active and energetic, so I was always participating in sports. Playing different sports and varying positions, I learned how to be a team player and to lead different groups of athletes to success. Team success is always the most rewarding for me. Field hockey has been a very present and special sport in my family as my mother, aunt, and grandmother all played.
I currently play for my club team, Focus Field Hockey, and am in the middle of our outdoor season. I play both forward and midfield as needed by my team. I have played competitive club field hockey for the past 3 years and plan to continue to develop my skills at higher levels. My teams won our U14 pool at the 2023 National Indoor Tournament and placed 1st in the 2024 U16 Region Club Championship. In 2024, I was selected to compete in the 2024 U16 NEXUS Regional Selection Camp and the U16 NEXUS Championship (Virginia Beach, Virginia).
My freshman JHS Varsity Field Hockey season ended with us qualifying for the State Tournament but losing in the Regional Semi-Final game. I played midfield for the first half of the season before making the transition to forward at the request of my coach. I finished the season with 12 goals, 16 assists, and being named to the 1st Team (Forward) All-Region team.
I truly recognized that leading and being the best teammate I could be was more fulfilling over individual accolades when I began to play field hockey. In my middle school years of sixth and seventh grade at Lois S. Hornsby Middle School, my school did not have a field hockey team due to the lack of a coach. My 8th grade year, we had a coach! I was so excited after waiting two years to have a chance to play for a school team, but we barely enough girls to fill half the roster. I made it my mission to recruit the girls of my school to join the team. I encouraged girls who were scared and nervous to try out, taught beginners the basics I knew, cheered on all my future teammates, and made endless amounts of posters.
By our first game of the season we had enough girls to play, and I was elected team captain. As a new program, we had our ups and downs, but we celebrated our successes and invested in each other as teammates and friends. I helped develop girls with no field hockey experience into a solid program that continues today. I now offer my time as a volunteer coach for the Hornsby Field Hockey team as a way to give back to a program that launched my school field hockey experience. Field hockey is more than a game to me. I love being a part of a team and this challenging experience opened my eyes to see the future I wanted to achieve with field hockey.
Thank you for your interest and good luck in your seasons.
~Alexis
