Personal Statement

My name is John Hummel. I am a senior at Timberland High School. My high school has approximately 2000 kids who attend and it is getting bigger every year. I am a very well rounded individual who is very involved in school activities. I currently participate in the high school Varsity Football, Varsity Basketball and Varsity Track and Field teams. I am a leader and a team player who has a lot of drive and determination to succeed. In April 2012, I was elected as the President of the Student Council and will serve in this position my senior year. My senior season of football has just kicked off and I will be playing Defensive End and Tight End. With my position change on Offense, my jersey number this fall will be 95. This year we have a new head coach, new staff and our team is implementing new offense and defense. The coaching staff has appointed me as a team leader. We had a busy summer schedule filled with conditioning, practice and camps. I also am training outside of practice with speed and conditioning coaches and lifting weights. During my junior season of football, I served as a team leader and captain throughout the year. As a junior (jersey #66), I played Defensive End and Offensive Tackle as our team moved to a spread offense. Playing on both sides of the line meant that I had to be in top condition and mentally prepared for each team we faced. Our team did not have the best record this year but as a leader, I had to not only keep a positive attitude but also keep up the moral of my teammates. As a sophomore (jersey #85), I made the starting varsity team. I played Wingback, Tight-End, Defensive End, special teams for Punt and Kickoff Reception, and was the Kickoff Kicker. My school does not allow freshmen to play junior varsity or varsity football. As a freshman (jersey #66), I was a team captain, I played Offensive Right Tackle and Defensive End, was the Kickoff Team Kicker, and served as the Long Snapper for field goals and punts. I am a pretty versatile player and attempt to give a 110% at any position the coach asks me to play. My favorite position is defensive end because I love to stop the offensive ball carriers in their tracks. I also participate in Basketball. As a freshman, I was one of four freshman picked to play at the junior-varsity Basketball level. I was a starter and played forward for the team. As a sophomore, I typically started for varsity team as a forward. If varsity does not have a game, I play for the junior varsity team which allows me more playing time. As a junior, I started as a forward for the varsity team. I received Academic All Conference awards for Basketball in both my sophomore and junior years. I lettered as a freshmen in Track and Field. For Track and Field, I throw shot and disc. My best throw as a freshman was 42 ft 11in and as a sophomore was 46 ft 11in. As a junior, I set my personal goal to make it to the State meet for Shot Put. My best mark this year is 52 ft 0in; which ranked me as 7th in the state. I have Academic All Conference awards for Track in my freshman, sophomore and junior years. In addition to being very actively involved in sports, I have been elected to be the President of our student body my senior year. As a junior, I served in an elected office as the Parliamentarian for our Student Council and was the Faculty Relations Commissioner as a sophomore. While being a member of the Student Council, I have ran special projects to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation, actively participated in the Homecoming Committee, ran the Powder Buff Volleyball Tournament and coached the Sophomore Girls Football team to the championship for the Power Puff football tournament during the 2010 Homecoming. For the first year of high school, I maintained a 4.0 and was ranked number 1 in my class. At the end of of my junior year, my GPA is 3.952 cumulative and I am ranked 37th of 456. I am taking honors classes and AP classes to prepare me for college and my future and have set a goal improve my GPA back to a 4.0 or higher. As a sophomore, I was inducted into the National Honor Society and I still remain a member today. My parents are John and Kelly. They both own and operate their own businesses which keep them very busy but they always take time to watch me play sports. They are also actively involved with our all sports and football booster clubs and my mom takes off on Friday’s to provide the team pre-game meals. Both of my parents played sports in both high school and at a collegiate level. They have explained to me the dedication and effort that is required to compete at a collegiate level. I am an only child and I am a member of the Morning Star Church where I attend with my parents and our extended family. My parents and grandparents are my biggest cheerleaders on and off the field. I am interested in a college that can provide me the opportunity to obtain a great education and the opportunity to participate on the field for the football team. Since I am only a junior in High School, I have not decided on what to major in during college. I am very good at both science and math and leaning towards either an engineering degree, a degree in the financial field, or a political science/law degree. The size of the college I attend does not really matter to me. I feel that I could fit in any size college. I have traveled both within the United States and abroad. I am open to playing anywhere in the United States. I would like the opportunity to play football at a school that is going to prepare me for my future after college with a great education. I want to play for coaches who take an active interest in their players and making them successful teammates on and off the field. I want to be a teammate that is respected by my fellow teammates on and off the field for my efforts as an athlete and as an individual. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss what I can offer your college as an individual and a player and learning more about the opportunity to play for you at your college and how being a player and attending your university will help prepare me for my future.
