How can I set a good example for my four younger brothers as well as others I meet in my daily life? Active leadership and service to others are the ways in which I strive to make my mark.
The Boy Scouts and the National Order of the Arrow have shaped who I am and who I hope to become. My participation in the Boy Scouts’ National Youth Leadership Training and National Jamboree helped me to develop leadership skills that will extend far beyond scouting. As my Boy Scout Troop’s founder and its first Senior Patrol Leader, I was responsible for guiding younger scouts on their journey toward Eagle Scout. My own journey to Eagle Scout has brought me to a deeply personal Eagle Project – helping to renovate the pre-school my brothers and I attended over the years (and which my youngest brother currently attends), which sustained massive flooding as a result of Hurricane Harvey. My brothers and I, along with other members of my Troop, are building new lockers, bookshelves, and cabinets to restore a school that means so much to me. In addition, we led a campaign that collected more than one thousand books to replace the school’s flooded library. I plan to continue my work with my Troop, and in a Venture Crew I recently helped form in my community, even after I complete my Eagle Project.
College athletics and academics will provide new opportunities for me to lead and serve, to continue to develop my character, and to set a positive example. I do not view a college education simply as a path to a career. A college education also will provide me with the resources to mentor those who need direction in their lives, to offer opportunities to those who struggle for recognition, and to inspire others to go out and serve. That is what I want my brothers to witness and emulate.
