Personal Statement
I have been playing on basketball teams since I was 5 years old. My Mom has been the biggest influence in my life. She encourages me to do my best in school and has always sacrificed for me to participate in any extra-curricular activity I may be interested in trying. I have played many different sports over the years but basketball has been a constant in my life. Sports has helped me learn the importance of hard work, commitment, and goals. One thing I have learned from sports was during one of the most difficult times of my life. When I was in middle school, my Dad died in a car accident and then my Mom received a cancer diagnosis 6 months later. I was lucky enough to have great men, my middle school coach and my AAU coaches, to help fill the void and guide me through. I learned that my team is not just a team but is a family. I learned that I am stronger than I think and I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I have a younger brother and I have learned that I need to be an example for him because he looks up to me.
In my junior year this year, I am determined to maintain my high GPA as well as working hard on the basketball court and football field. I have the drive to give it my all every time I play, whether in practice or in a championship game. My goals are to get academic and athletic scholarships to be able to play college basketball. Currently, I am undecided whether I will major in pre-pharmacy or athletic training. I have always known I would go to college. I may not be committed 100% to my college major yet but I am committed to giving 100% to playing college basketball. It will be a dream come true.
