Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Everett Dabbs. I am a Junior at Saltillo High School in Saltillo, Mississippi. I have played multiple sports since the young age of 3. My parents like to joke that I was born with a ball in my hand. The sports that I have excelled at include baseball, basketball, and golf. In May of 2021, at 14 years old, I put my baseball bat down and picked up a golf club, never looking back. I became friends with another golfer my age at school that encouraged me to try out for the golf team spring of Freshman year (2022). Not only did I make the team, I was immediately placed on the varsity team as 3rd man.

During my Freshman year, I tied for 3rd place individual medalist at Region 1, Division 5A and the team won 1st Place in Region 1, Division 5A. We went on to place 3rd at the 5A State tournament.

During the summer of 2022, I participated in the North MS Coke Jr. Tour. There I placed 3rd over all in one of the qualifying tournaments and went on to place 3rd in the championship tournament for the 14-15 year age group. This drove me to push myself to be better and do better by seeking out a private coach to help me hone my skills. I worked tirelessly, practicing every day during the fall of 2022 individually as well as with my teammates. We had a goal to place higher in the final 5A  tournaments and to win if at all possible.

During my Sophomore year, in the spring of 2023, I played varsity 3rd man and brought home 1st Place overall individual medalist in a 9-hole tournament. I placed 2nd overall individual medalist at the Region 1, Division 5A tournament and the team won 1st Place in Region 1, Division 5A. We went on to secure 2nd place at the 5A state tournament. I continued to work hard and work with a private coach, practicing every day possible. I entered the North MS Coke Jr. Tour once again in the summer of 2023. I placed overall 1st medalist at one of the tournaments and finished tied for 2nd Place in the overall standings at the end of the tour for ages 16-18 year age group.

MHSAA changed the golf season of all state high schools to the fall. I just finished my third, varsity season of high school golf where I secured the 1st man position. I have finished overall 1st place medalist, tied for overall 1st place medalist (twice), and finished overall 1st place medalist (with a score of 32) at four different 9-hole tournaments during the season. We competed in the Region 1, Division 6A tournament, where we won as a team by 34 strokes with a score of 302. I finished as individual 1st place medalist with a score of 73.

Our varsity team just secured Saltillo High School's first ever State Championship in golf. It was also the school's first athletic state championship win in the 6A division. We are now the MHSAA Division 6A State Boys Golf Champions. I finished 6th over all with a score of 164. The team won by 14 strokes with a score of 671.

I currently hold the lowest score record at Saltillo High School with a score of -4. I received "Player of the Match" eight times during my Sophomore and Junior year so far. I am currently ranked 47th in the state of Mississippi high school golfers.

It has been my dream since I began playing golf to one day play on the college level. I have always worked hard in golf and academics, joining BETA Club and maintaining a 4.0 GPA is extremely important to me. I won the coveted Physical Science Award in the spring of my sophomore year. I strive to be the absolute best that I can be and invest all of my time and energy to those things. I learned at a young age when you get knocked down, you get up and keep on going. I learn from my mistakes and strive to do better every time adversity comes my way. I have very supportive, hard-working parents that have instilled in me a dedicated work ethic in all areas of life.

Moral character is another area that is very important to me. You can compete and hold yourself to a high standard of sportsmanship and kindness while doing so. This is not only important in sports and as a student, but as well in all of the relationships in my life. I enjoy being a part of the REACH Club at my high school. This is the group of myself and my peers that work with the wonderful special needs students in our student body. We strive as a group, as well as individually, to include them in all areas of student-life on campus and participate with them in the Special Olympics. It is such a rewarding experience to teach them sports fundamentals, help them develop those skills, and see them compete at a championship level. Special needs children, teens, and adults hold a very dear place in my heart. I mentioned earlier that I learned independence at a young age. This had a lot to do with growing up with a special needs, older brother that is on the Autism Spectrum and then developed a debilitating autoimmune disease when he was 14 years old and I was 10. He struggled immensely through the years and required a lot of help from all of us as a family. Through our help and many years of therapy he became a role model for me in my own life. If my brother, Dawson, could do all he has done and manage to get a full scholarship to Mississippi State University, the sky wasn't even the limit for me, the sun is! He has encouraged me, tutored me, and shown me unconditional love like no one other than my parents. Not many younger siblings can say that about an older brother. He is my biggest cheerleader and I hope to be a role model and mentor to the youth around me and show them that with hard work and dedication, they too can do anything.

My field of interest is in forensic science and I hope to pursue a degree in that area, with an emphasis on DNA analysis, blood-spatter analysis, and chemistry as a whole. I would also love to continue to volunteer helping the special needs students on campus while I play golf and work towards my degree, as that will always hold a special place in my life and heart. I look forward to learning even more about golf from the expertise of college level coaches and teammates. I am always eager to listen, learn, and better myself and skills in every way possible.

Thank you for considering me as a candidate for your organization. I appreciate your time.
