Completing my Eagle Scout Project was one of the most rewarding and challenging accomplishments in my life. I built a fully-functioning studio apartment – with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, pantry, bedroom, living and dining areas – in my local middle school. It is used to teach daily living skills - cooking a meal, washing clothes, making a bed, setting a table, etc. - in a hands-on manner to students with cognitive and developmental challenges.
During my work, I faced numerous obstacles involving bureaucratic red tape, workplace politics, management of contractors and communication challenges. Rather than give up when faced with each stumbling block, I thought creatively, asked for help, leaned on my fellow Scouts and re-focused my efforts to overcome the hurdle. As a result, the completed room not only looks great and is fully-functional, it helps countless special needs students in my school district to work on the skills they need to live as independently as possible.
The same skills I used to complete my Project help on the golf course. Perseverance in the face of adversity, the ability to ask for and accept help, and the understanding of the power in a group’s efforts are essential traits that will make me an invaluable member of your team. I know I have the athletic talent to be a solid scorer at the college level, but I also possess the strength of character, empathy, work ethic and professionalism to make a positive impact on your program. I will be a leader on and off the course – in academics and athletics. I will be the type of player, student and person your program deserves and I look forward to working together.
