April 2023 PracticeHello Coaches, my name is Jack Donahoo and I am in the graduating class of '25. As of the end of the 2023 spring season, I have coxed for a year and a half and transitioned to rowing this spring. I started as a cox, and in fall of 2022. We had a great year as my U174x+ finished 3rd at the Southwest Regionals and 10th at the Youth Nationals in Sarasota, although we had the 9th fastest time. I continued to cox for fall ’23 and my U17 eight won the Long Beach Invitational Christmas Regatta. My coxing career was cut short by a couple of growth spurts, so I transitioned to rowing this spring ‘23, which was actually why I joined the club to begin with. I plan on rowing for the rest of my career. I can fill any seat in the boat, whether sweeping or sculling. I can bow blind boats or stroke and fill all the seats in between.
One thing that I have been very proud of was having been awarded the Coaches’ Award for Perseverance at this year’s end of the season banquet. My coach, Lacey Shelton, acknowledged my drive and work ethic, not only at improving my own skills, but also working to make every boat I am in the best it can be. This meant a lot to me because Lacey is a very tough, but incredible coach. This was something that I strove to do as a coxswain. How do I get the most out of my rowers? What does each rower need to hear to dig deeper and give their all? Seeing my boat improve through this process and having my rowers see what they were capable of gave me the greatest satisfaction. I’ve carried the drive to make every boat I am in as good as it can be with me as a rower.
