I’ve had the privilege to learn that rowing is a pure meritocracy. I’ve rowed in boats where medals are won or lost by hundredths of a second. This level of winning is based on talent, effort, being coachable, and having a respect for and an understanding of teamwork.
Talent alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by self-awareness, an intellectual curiosity to learn from every practice and learn from every race, focused hard work, organized goal setting/programming and other intangibles. My progress is honed by consistency and the motivation to "pay the price" over and over – not only in the classroom, but in the weight room, on the road, on the bike, on the erg and ultimately on the water. Races are won and success is measured by our collective ability to endure very high heart rates for extended periods of time while maintaining a calm demeanor at every stroke rate – straight through the finish line.
I look forward to joining a program and continuing to grow with teammates who share and appreciate these values in every practice to put us in the best position on race day.
