For as long as I can remember I have dedicated myself to a variety of sports including lacrosse, swimming, baseball, track, and wrestling in search of something I truly loved to do. In 8th grade, my mother, a former college rower, asked if I would like to try out rowing. That first day on the water was the happiest I had ever been -- the freedom, athleticism, and team camaraderie was unmatched. I still recall hearing that first effortless splash of the oar slipping into the water, the tremendous speed of the boat, and the glistening water as the team glided in unison across the water. I knew right then that I had found "my" sport, which remains my athletic and personal devotion to this day. The hard work, challenging pace, and necessity to improve and grow as rower continues to be my guidepost. As I have steadily moved through the ranks to be a leader and varsity rower, I constantly seek to perfect my physical strength and stamina as well as my mental toughness. Through a structured workout and diet regimen, I have consistently improved my erg scores and finesse.
While rowing serves as my physical outlet, I also focus on my mind and spirit through my academic passions. I am enthralled with the study of various philosophical concepts and teachings, as well as the hard sciences, i.e. physics, chemistry, and biology. As to philosophy, thinking and answering the questions that no one else will ask, and trying to uncover the deepest truths of the universe, led me to my parallel passion for science. I love building things, playing chess, learning about other countries cultures (particularly in the Middle East), reading, and a whole host of other sports and activities. I think what sets me apart from my peers is that I am a very well-rounded person who is passionate about more things than just rowing which I think will bring a new aspect and a new life into a college rowing team.
I am doing very well academically and am doing an independent study in philosophy for my junior year and an independent study in physics for my senior year. I am also entering my 4th year of Arabic and selected to participate in the highly selective Digital Experiment Middle East - U.S. cultural/language exchange program.
I think what sets me apart from my peers concerning my character is that I am totally dedicated to whatever I set myself to accomplish. I am loyal, honest, respectful, and dependable. I am wholly dedicated to my crew teammates and work very hard to be a team-player and a calm source of leadership.
