Personal Statement

I am a highly motivated student-athlete interested in pursuing a degree in Engineering. I have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, as evidenced by my 3.67 GPA. I am eager to contribute my skills, dedication, and passion for rowing in a competitive university program while excelling academically and preparing for a successful future career.

I am excited about the opportunity to come to [University] to show what I can do in the rowing program.

“Let me tell you about some of the things I have done”

Every regatta I attended in BC I made it to the podium in one or more boats. Here are a few examples:

  • 2023 BC Champs U17 men's single - provincial champion, U19 men’s single 2nd

  • 2023 Shawnigan Scholastic Regatta U17 men’s 4x 1st

  • 2023 Brentwood International Regatta U17 men’s single 2nd, U17 men’s 4x+ 4th

“Let me tell you about some of the things I am doing.”

I am in an elite development program. The program has a specific focus - on developing techniques in small boats and on committing to the necessary volume of training in support of aiming for performance goals at the Provincial and National Team levels. As part of this development program I intend to compete at the following regattas:

  • National Rowing Championships – Provincial Team – September

  • Head of the Gorge (Victoria)

  • Tail of the Gorge (Victoria)

  • Head of the Lake (Seattle,WA)- November

With weekly training of 18 to 20 hours, I am quickly transitioning from sculling to sweeping.

“Let me tell you about some of the things that I am planning to do.”

My projected 2k score will be 6:40 by the end of summer of 2024. My 6k goal is to drop a minute by the end of 2024. From these competitions above, I am planning to compete in the Junior National Team Selection in the spring of 2024. This will lead to the 2024 Junior Worlds Regatta in St.Catharines, ON Canada.

I have learned that leadership and sportsmanship skills are very important for being a well rounded and respected athlete. A leader is a person who makes everyone feel included in activities, someone who builds the team's community, keeps their team and crew feeling supported and strong, and ensures they represent their club well. Equally having good sportsmanship manners is crucial to gaining someone's respect and having positive relationships with others in your day-to-day life. Recently I won the Heart and Hustle Award from my rowing club, it was an honor and a privilege to be given that award. It was a step in the right direction but there can alway be improvements to how I act and speak to my friends, rowers, and peers. These skills are transferable in my daily life because I present myself in a way that is open to peoples opinions and I respect their ideas at school, rowing, and work. That way, I can become not just a better athlete, but a better person too.

So, in closing, as you can see, I am a dedicated aspiring athlete, who loves rowing.I hope you will consider me for your rowing program, and I can’t wait to see what I can achieve!
