My plan for my future is to study mechanical engineering in college and have a successful career afterwards. I tranferred to Doane Academy this year, which, at first, was terrifying for me. I had only attended my local school district until then, but it wasn't seriving me academically-I was looking for more of a challenge and to become more prepared for college.
Someone suggested I try joining the crew team and I have to admit, I wasn't really thinking of it as a serious endeavor. I have been playing travel ice hockey for years and I am a varsity discus thrower- I figrued since Doane didn't have track and field, I would give it a try to fulfill my requirement to participate in a sport.
I was not prepared for what happend at my first practice. I really loved it and I was successful at it right away. I am not new to sports as I started playing team sports in elementary school. I have always tried my hardest at ice hockey, and to be honest, I am always just behind the rest of the team, despite my hours of training and practice. I am always just a little too slow or just a little off position from where I intended to be.
In contrast, that first day on the river, I felt fluid and in tune with the rowers. It was a very powerful experience. I have only rowed for one season, however, I get better every day. I strive to perfect my technique at each practice and I dedicate my time to increase my skill. Unlike hockey, I am seeing immediate and undeniable results.
I know I am new to the sport, but I love it. I am extremely coachable- I take suggestions very seriously and strive to implement any techniques or suggestions given to me. I am dedicated to my teammates and know we can improve together. My approach to school is very similar. I take my classes and grades very seriously and make every effort to take the highest level classes availble and maintain an A average.
I am looking for a college or university which will allow me to particpate in a rigorous curriculum while pursuing rowing.
