Personal Statement

My name is Caleb Pym and I am seventeen years old. As a hard worker and team player, I have loved physical exercise since I was little. My motto is to lead team players by example. Currently, I follow this motto by leading stretches and the warmup run for my Varsity Soccer Team. In addition, I perform drills first so others can follow my example. As a current senior, I plan to supply my future college with excellence and hope to serve as a future athlete for their collegiate team. Attributes that set me apart from others include my unique background, my hard work ethic, and my team leading experience.

My background has taught me character values that separate me from others. Through homeschool, I developed principles such as integrity and time management. For instance, doing school at home requires discipline. When I wake up in the morning, I know I am responsible for accomplishing my daily tasks. Since I must balance my academic workload with other responsibilities from home, homeschooling presents a challenge. I overcome this challenge by writing a  weekly schedule and taping it to my wall. For the past several years, I have shown the weekly list to my mom and asked her to keep me accountable for my work. From this place, I maintained integrity and forced myself to develop time management. Waking early and fresh, I developed a unique habit that allowed me to accomplish all my homework, and a little extra to set aside to prepare for college entrance examinations. In sum, my background has prepared me for my future by teaching me important values. In my future, I plan to devote my time to both an athletic team and an ROTC program. Although this aspiration will be challenging, I believe that my previous experience in managing my time gives me an edge to do well.

In regards to my collegiate future, I have set goals that will require hard work. One of these goals includes graduating from college debt-free. While this goal will be hard to achieve, I know that it is possible. From the age of twelve, I worked a summer job in my dad's lawn and landscape business. Almost every day, we reached our first lawn by eight and would work until it was too dark to see. My primary job was to trim the lawns that we mowed; other jobs that I did included digging trenches, pulling weeds, and shoveling mulch. Over the past five summers, I accumulated a total of fifteen hundred hours of work in his business. Through this experience, I found that nothing worthwhile comes without hard work. Due to this understanding, I have tried my best to carry this trait into other areas of my life. Presently, I offer work ethic in my athletics: running at home, going to the gym, and faithfully attending practice all demonstrate my hard work ethic. Through the hard work in my life, I have shown that I want to be someone who lives with meaning.

Another characteristic that sets me apart from others is my team leading experience. As a soccer player, I captained a club team in eighth and ninth grade while playing Varsity for my homeschool team. After this busy time, I chose to only play soccer for my Varsity Team. During the new season, I not only changed my team but also my position. By switching from the midfield to defense, I learned to adjust by playing the position on which the team needed me. For the past two seasons, I have captained my Varsity Team. Resultingly, I have had a variety of team leadership, even though it is not just limited to the soccer field. Other teams that I have led are my High School Chess Team and Bible Quiz Team. While all the teams I have played on have different aims, they are all constructed based on teamwork. Importantly, each team has taught me to communicate effectively and to endure.

Through my past, I have grown into whom I am today. As a senior and potential undergraduate student, I plan to work hard and perform my very best. For me, playing a soccer match is not just fun; it is a way I can express myself and prove my character.
