Personal Statement

  • My name is Owen Whitman, and I’ll be graduating from Norman North High school in 2023.

  • During the summer of 2017, my family and I had the opportunity to host two coaches from Barcelona while they were in the United States for a soccer camp. For the week that these coaches were staying with us, I spent every afternoon after camp in the backyard, juggling and shooting with them. As a result of that camp, I was invited to travel to Barcelona where I got to train in FCB facilities, play against local clubs, and meet pro players with other top players from across the country. Although I had been playing soccer since I was very young, these experiences motivated me, and I developed a deep appreciation for the very technical, yet creative, side of the game. Since then, I’ve worked toward my goal of playing in college.

Here are some accomplishments that make me think I will be successful in college:

    • - I’ve had a productive high school soccer career. From the time I started on varsity as a freshman, to winning the Oklahoma 6A state championship my junior year, I’ve brought a technical and quick-thinking dimension to my team. In that 2022 state championship season I had the most assists on my team and the second most goals.

      • - I have 4 years of experience at the ECNL level playing most recently for Oklahoma Energy FC. Throughout my club career, I have played center mid, where I feel most comfortable, but I have also shown versatility by playing outside mid and right back.

    • - Academically, I’ve pushed myself throughout high school.  I took the most challenging classes I could, including eight APs, became a member of the National Honor Society, and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I earned a 1420 on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT.

    • - I’ve had the opportunity to play overseas. I traveled to Barcelona in 2017, as mentioned above, and to England in 2018. In England I learned from Manchester City Youth Coaches at their training grounds as well as English youth national team coaches at St. George’s Park.

    • - During the past two summers, I have held private soccer lessons for young players, coaching over 10 sessions a week.

    • - I’ve been recognized for my respectful personality by receiving the Masonic Student of Today award in 2019 and the Norman North Team Character award in 2021.

  • I hope that these experiences and accolades show that I would be a good fit for your school and soccer program. I’m pursuing an excellent education while continuing to play the game I love.
