Personal Statement

The reason why I want to play soccer is simple; because I love the game.

Soccer has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Over the years, it has shaped who I have become. At the age of three, soccer was a way for me to channel my energy, but as I grew older it became something more. I moved to Germany when I was six, leaving everything that I knew behind. Soccer was the only constant. It was hard because I didn’t speak the language at first. But over time, soccer helped me create new skills, new friendships, a sense of community and a city championship trophy.

Leaving the team after four years to return to Texas was tough, but not as tough as what came next. Within a month of moving back, we found out that my little sister had cancer, and everything changed pretty quickly. With my parents helping my sister through the treatment and having to start over at a new school, soccer was an outlet for me. Being on the pitch was the place where I felt happy. To this day, nothing beats the feeling of those moments on the pitch when all the work and effort comes together in a play. As I’m preparing for the next big transition, I’m excited by the possibility of playing in college, not just for the love of the game but for the sense of community that comes with being on the team.

I think my athleticism, speed and coachability would make me a valuable contributor to your team.  My versatility and ability to read the field are also assets. I have played a number of positions and am willing and able to learn new skills for my team to succeed. Though my primary position is striker, I can rotate to left and right wing. In the 2019 National League Showcase with my club team, a couple of my teammates couldn’t come at  the last minute, leaving me, a striker, in the center back position. I was able to leave the tournament with a clean sheet, not one goal scored against me. I am also comfortable in leadership roles on and off the pitch. I was captain on my middle school soccer team and a member of the school’s leadership program.

Learning is also very important to me. I attend Carnegie Vanguard High School, which is one of the top-ranked public high schools nationally. I have maintained a 4.42 GPA my Junior year while playing competitive club soccer and serving as Technical Director in my school’s theater company. The ability to balance these three things demonstrates work ethic, competitiveness, teamwork and time management.

My goal is to attend a college or university with rigorous acedemics and the opportunity to play in a competitive soccer program at the D1, D2, or D3 level. I want a college that has a good soccer team and rigorous academics. Though I’ve only just started looking at college campuses, I think I would enjoy a mid-sized campus that offers a broad range of majors and is located in a large town or city.

I look forward to learning more about your program,

Justin Seabrook
