Soccer has played an influential role in my family. My grandfather was a professional player in Colombia, as were his two brothers. After his career as a player, he was a professional soccer coach for several teams in his country, including the Colombian National team. My father has a similar passion for the game. He played on his state’s selection team and second division in Colombia, and he earned a full scholarship at his university in Texas. Continuing the traditions established by my role models, I played my first soccer game at the age of 4 and I plan to continue playing soccer for as long as I can. Soccer is part of daily life in my family.
My name is Jonathan Ortiz. I am a junior at Cinco Ranch High School (UIL Class 6A) in Katy, Texas. As a freshman, I quickly earned a starting position on the varsity soccer team. I am also working towards a national qualification this season on my club team in the ENPL league. My strongest positions are right wing and right defender, and I am flexible on the field and will perform in any position to support the team. In every game I play with deep heart and character, and I understand that hard work and dedication are required to be a successful, well-rounded athlete. I push myself to perform at my highest level, and this diligence has helped me successfully juggle academics, high school soccer and club soccer. I have also had the privilege of working with many trainers, coaches and teachers who encouraged me to maintain my sense of focus, drive and perseverance. I was selected for the Olympic Development Program’s South Texas State Pool, and I represented South Texas at Region III ODP Camp in Alabama in 2017.
My goal is to achieve a spot on a university soccer team where I can contribute to the success of the team, as well as continue to grow personally. My passion for the game increases with every season and I hope to continue as a student athlete at the university level.
