As my coach once told me "I can put you in any lane with any combination of swimmers, and you are able to get along". At college, no matter the team, I know I can inspire and lead my teammates, however not in a position of superiority, but in a position of equality. I have grown to never see myself as an individual with individual goals. I see myself as part of a unit: the team. If I do not push with every fragment of intent I can muster, not only in swimming, but in everything I do, I genuinely feel as if I have lowered the potential of my team as a whole. A time drop, no matter how significant, is not my own, but that of my team. Any "failure" is not of the individual, but of the team. We do not think in terms of "How could you fix it?". We think "How could we have done better?". I know that, if it were not for my team, which includes the coaches and everyone who allows me to train in this extremely challenging sport, any success I contributed to the team would have been impossible. I could not have done anything in this sport without my team's constant support, and the value I give to my next team will be a reflection of how I have been molded into the swimmer I am today. It's not me, but us. My successes are a contribution to the team. Your shortcomings are ours to fix.
