September 2013Being a competitive and committed student athlete is harder than it looks. I feel like the last few years of being a varsity athlete within 3 major sports (softball, hockey and rugby), along with being named Captain of each team, has prepared me for my goal of playing University or College ball in the years to come. This year I was also voted Grad Class President, a position I am proud to hold and will do my very best to achieve success and make my classmates proud.
Playing university or college ball is a dream and I have worked very hard for especially the last few years; training on my own, choosing homework over outings with friends and at times traveling almost an hour each way to the nearest rink or field just to practice or play a game. It is my senior year and I have successfully completed the required courses to graduate along with the sciences requested of most university and college programs. This has allowed me to pursue course work that includes some aspect of physical activity along with learning more leadership skills that I will be able to practice and take with me in the years to come. During this past summer along with playing on the U18 provincial softball team, I helped coach a squirt girls’ softball team which was very rewarding. It was an excellent opportunity to not only give back to my community that did so much for me over the years as a young athlete, but it was also a great way to see things from a coaches point of view. I feel that it changed me as an athlete and also illustrated how rewarding yet challenging coaching can be.
Participating in sports as a spectator, athlete and as a coach has taught me team work, discipline, time management, commitment and leadership. I strongly believe that those are crucial qualities in a good employee and the one I strive to become. I can see myself within a career in the sports world as it is something I have always loved, worked hard at and as a result excelled in. Sports and recreation and humanities are subjects I would like to explore. I love to travel and would like to see as much of the world as possible. It would be amazing if I could be lucky enough to play ball and possibly have a future career related to sports that allowed me to do so.
