Personal Statement

my name is stevie cook and I look forward to going to college to study what i’m passionate about. I’m looking to study indigenous law and become a lawyer for indigenous people because that’s my culture and I would like to help my people. I began playing softball in seventh grade only because they needed another player to have a team and I thought why not. My first day of practice I got nailed in the eye with a ball and I felt like that made me start to like the sport because the bruise looked tough. But I then started to try everyday harder and harder I threw at a net all the time outside and got myself the weighted balls to get a stronger arm. I eventually looked at travel teams and tried out for one. I didn’t make it my first year and I was devastated, but made me want to push myself with this sport. I started going to lessons and worked hard and when I played again in eighth grade I was told i’m very good at softball and I was shocked. This one girl who played the varsity team when I played modified I looked up to because she always did great in the sport she was not scared of the ball and I watched her at all the games I could make it to and I thought one day I can be like her, one day girls that are younger will look up to me like that, one day I could play in a higher league then school ball, one day I will play on the Oklahoma softball field, and i thought one day at the time it will take me to become something great. I think i’d be a great player for college because I can learn from my mistakes and try not to bring myself down if situations get tough and I make a bad play. I can hit the ball with power, I always attempt to get the balls that can be almost unreachable for me, I try not to be nervous since i’ll play the game I love with a passion. what makes me different is I love meeting new people, I love sharing what my culture and heritage is about and think of it while i’m on that field that my family that’s passed on is watching. im very loud when it comes to cheering for my teammates who eventually become my softball sisters. I love volunteering for my community and talking with elders and learning from them weather it be language, teachings, life lessons, or even just stories from how it used to be in the old days. I won’t sugar code it but i’m not the kind of girl to get 95’s and above on her papers or class average in general but I like to understand what i’m being given as an assignment, I stay after with teachers before tests and do great I try my best but I know success isn’t always something that happens especially in school since it just gets tougher and tougher but I try to become a student that can manage school, work, community service, longhouse, and sports, and I myself think I do one pretty good job at it. But when I get to college that’s where it’s at my life that will one day be my job to provide for my present family and future family. Many people tell me that I have a personality that lights up the room if I walk in, i’m not afraid to talk to people, I like to learn and i’m a great listener. One thing softball and playing sports in general has taught me is that not everything is easy you may be tied up in life but can always make that come back and surprises people. It teaches me time management, teaches me how to become a better person towards others. It seems kinda odd but I feel like and the way I feel when I step onto the field go hand and hand it you really think about it. sorry for it being so long but thanks for reading and if i don’t seem like the team candidate I appreciate the time.
