Josie Russell '25 Recruiting Profile

I was once described by my 7th grade basketball coach as "the definition of a student athlete". That season I was awarded the Sportsmanship Award not only for my contributions to the success of the team (undefeated season) and willingness/ability to play wherever needed, but also for my commitment to my academics.  I credit my 5th grade travel coach's focus on position-less basketball for teaching me to play multiple positions.  My position flexibility means that on the floor I'm a responsible defender and not only can I battle in the paint, clean the glass, and score with either hand around the rim; but, I can also handle and dish the ball, get to the rim for a layup or floater, drain a mid-range jumper from the elbow or short-corner, and/or knock-it-down from beyond the arc.  

As a sophomore, I have just finished my 2nd season playing on the varsity team and my 1st year as a starter.  I am thankful for the opportunity to have played alongside and to be mentored by a 1000pt scorer (only the 4th in school history) while also having the honor of serving as Co-Captain.  Over the numerous years of playing basketball I have been blessed with various team and individual awards and recognition; however, I'm the most proud of the two Academic Excellence Awards and the Academic Varsity Letter that I've received so far.

Ultimately, my collegiate goal would be to find the right fit where I can be challenged academically while having the opportunity to continue my basketball career.  My professional interests stem from the extensive work I've done with my personal trainer over the past few years as well as the excellent athletic training staff at our high school.  I see that field as a way to combine my athletic and academic prowess.
