Personal Statement

My name is Grace Butler. My goal is to play college golf at the highest level possible. I started golfing around the age of five and started working towards my goal by the sixth grade.

Being a good teammate is equally important to me as playing golf. I have tried to encourage my teammates to be as good as they can be on and off the course. My involvement in student council is one example of this. Another example of my love for the game is that I was the only freshman on the 2018 team. Even though my classmates and friends are always doing other things, I have stayed with my goals.

It is a 27 hole tournament for the women. 9 holes day 1 and 18 on day 2. Day 1 shot 42. I was 4 stokes behind my sister who plays at Western Illinois and 3 behind a former college player and last years club champion. The final grouping on day 2 was myself, my sister and 2 former college players. I Shot 75, 38 / 37. Had 3 birdies, including a birdie on the 18th hole to win the championship by 1 stroke.

Finished T4th, Day 1 at Briarwood shot 78, 39/39. Day 2 at Otter Creek shot 81, 38/43.

First time playing the course. Shot 2 over par 74, 37 / 37. On the front 9 had bogeys on #2, #5, #6. Birdies on #7 and #8. On the back 9 had a bogey on #12 and 8 pars.

Finished in 1st Place. Shot 80, 42 / 38. 12/18 GIR (67%). Birdied the #1 HCP hole. The front nine was interesting playing in dense fog. The visibility was low enough that the range finders wouldn't work.

45th PGA Girls Junior Iowa Championship
7/10/20 to 7/11/20
Field of 22 finished in 8th place. Day 1 shot 83, 43 / 40. Fairways Hit: 10 / 13 (77%) GIR: 13 / 18 (72%) Day 2 shot 82, 38 / 44. Fairways Hit 11 / 13 (85%) GIR: 10 / 18 (56%). On Day 1 hit 8/9 GIR on the back nine and on day 2 hit 8/9 GIR on the front nine. Fastest greens I've ever played. I don't think there were more than 4 putts left short from all of us combined in 2 days. As upset as I am with missing on so many birdie opportunities, I am happy to have made as many comebacks as I did. Have worked hard on ball striking and accuracy including from uneven lies and stances and it's paying off.

Was invited to play in scratch league, when I can, which is primarily a men's league made up of the better golfers from my home course and in the area. There was an outing on the home course so we played at nearby Okoboji View. Shot 75, 37 / 38.

Field of 16, finished in 3rd Place. The course is a par 73. Had never played the course before. No practice rounds allowed. Day 1 shot 82, 40/42. Day 2 Shot 1 over par 74, 37/37.

Even though most things have been shut down because of COVID-19, I was able to get a practice 9 holes in. The guys I was playing with decided it was unfair for me to play from the women's tees. Playing from the men's tees I shot 42.
