From as far back as kindergarten, being athletically involved with a sport was always something extremely valuable to me. Whether it was soccer, basketball, or even gymnastics, I was eager to try anything. When I was about 7 years old, I had asked my mom to sign me up for figure skating lessons. As much as I enjoyed the skating aspect, I knew I wanted more. I can remember watching the boy's hockey practice before my lessons thinking, "that's what I want to do". Sure enough, my mom hesitantly signed me up. At 8 years old I stepped out onto the ice for my first hockey practice wearing my figure skates, sweatpants over my gear, and a floor hockey stick. From that moment on, I became dedicated to putting all my energy into improving my skills.
Over the years as I have played for multiple teams, I have learned to adapt to different structures and have gained a deeper insight into my own personal morals. I have learned the importance of dedication, prioritizing time, working with teams, and how to handle and react to difficult situations.
In this past year, I had made a goal for myself to become a captain of my hockey team. After stepping up, setting good examples, and becoming a leader, I was voted to be assistant captain of my hockey team. Earning this title was very special to me because I not only consider it a reflection of my hard work on the ice, but also a reflection of my character and how I have matured throughout the years.
Initially, at the beginning of my senior year, I was unsure about the idea of playing college level hockey For the most part, I was worried about my ability to find a balance between hockey, academics, and work. As I reach the end of my senior year, I have realized that I am not ready to give up hockey anytime soon and I can’t imagine the next four years without it. Considering I have maintained a job for three years of highschool, played a sport, and managed to do well academically, I believe I will be able to succeed while playing a collegiate sport.
