Hello, my name is Stefanie Caban, I am a 5’7 150lb defenceman and a Junior at Oakmont Regional High School. I have been playing Ice Hockey since I was seven. In my first few years of playing I played in my town league with boys. I played with them up until U12 when I switched to play for Assabet. During my time in Assabet I have had a lot of success. In 2015 my team won states and competed at Nationals in Lansing Michigan where we won a National Title. In 2016 my team got second in states and competed in Nationals where we took home Bronze, and in 2017 my team won states. While Assabet is only a half season team I spend my other half of the season playing with my high school team. Over my Freshman and Sophomore year I averaged 37 goals and received MVP 2 years in a row. I was also named a All-Star in the Worcester Telegram and Athlete of the year in my local paper for ice hockey.
During the off season I stay in shape by playing dek/ball hockey. I have been playing ball hockey since I was three. Through all my years of playing I have had to play with boys which forces me to play more aggressive and increase my speed. Last year, after many tryouts I was selected to play on the USA Women's Ball Hockey Team. I was the youngest member on the team by seven years. A few months ago my team traveled to the Czech Republic to compete in the world tournament. In the Czech Republic my team placed silver after a tough overtime loss against the Czech, but that was the first time that the women's USA team made it to the gold medal game. I was also awarded All Star Defenseman at the end of all the games. Going to the Czech Republic was an amazing experience to see how much tougher the competition is in other countries and being able to play with women who are in the NWHL or played ice hockey for Division 1 schools was also a great learning experience.
Another way I stay in shape during off season is playing field hockey. I just started playing last year and it was very difficult having to use a right handed stick when I am a lefty but I eventually got the hang of it. I made varsity my first year and we won the League and District Championship and made it to State Finals. I was also awarded rookie of the year my sophomore year.
In the spring I run track for my school. I started track in 6th grade and I was on varsity every year in high school. I run 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles and throw javelin and shot put. My freshman year I was awarded rookie of the year.
Along with all my sports I have a personal trainer who I meet with once a week who teaches me how to properly lift weights and use the machines at my gym correctly. He also helps me stay on track with my workout plan and gives me workouts that help me with speed and strength.
