Personal Statement

Playing lacrosse has been something I’ve always enjoyed since I first started in fifth grade. When I first started out, I relied more on my athletic ability than my actual skill. I was a little behind the curb of most of my fellow teammates in regard to technical skill. However, I quickly realized that I could be there with hard work and lots of focus, so that’s what I set myself on. I joined a club team and tried to go to every practice on Sunday and to give it my all. Over that year from sixth to seventh grade, I drastically improved. Lacrosse has taught me so much about hard work.

To this day, I still try to work hard in every single game I play. At practice, I stay focused and positive with my teammates because lacrosse has also taught me about teamwork and what it is to be a teammate. I’ve learned in my many years now at GSE that sometimes games don’t always go your way but it’s important not to place the blame on any one person. When times get tough, you have to stick together and remember to focus on the things that are important and if you’re not playing for yourself, to play for the team because they are relying on you.

My lacrosse team has never won a tournament. There have been a lot of runs for first place but we have always come away with second. However, this has taught me a valuable lesson. It is one thing to always win, but it is another to know what it is like to lose. Learning to lose, understanding it, but working hard anyway. Even though my lacrosse team may not win every time, I have learned to have a good attitude even when things don’t go my way, and to give it my all until the last whistle of the game blows, regardless of what the scoreboard is.

Lacrosse has also taught me that you have to work hard to achieve the results you want. I was late to starting lacrosse. The first time I ever held a stick was in fifth grade, and I was really behind everyone else, who had gotten their starts in lacrosse much earlier. It took a lot of practicing for me to even be able to catch the ball as easily as the other girls. But after a lot of practicing in fifth grade, I was good enough to try out and be on a club team in sixth grade. Not only am I looking for an athletic fit in a school, but an academic fit as well. I like to be challenged and will face them head on.
