My name is Kyla Newkirk, a future 2024 graduate of Durham Academy in Durham, NC. I have been playing lacrosse since the 2nd grade and love the sport with all my heart! I wish to attend college after graduation and become a lawyer or an orthodontist ...you will see from my profile how I have been working as an intern throughout the summers to gain personal insight in these fields. While playing for Carolina Fever and Playing for my school’s varsity lacrosse team, since 8th grade, I take pride in bringing strong grit and tenacity to the field. I don’t give up, no matter the score! I play hard and give hustle until the very end of the game. I was given the Intensity Award by my coaches and teammates because of the energy I bring to the field! Even if I’m hurt or draw weary and the coach decides to give me a break, I’m the one requesting to get back on the field! I have this heart in everything I do, from maintaining High Honors throughout my academic school years, student council leader, Vice President of my class, my school student ambassador, member of my school‘s speech and debate team, receiving countless awards for my service in the community (one that I’m most proud of will be receiving a Proclamation from our former Mayor and Councilman Butterfield; proclaiming March 22nd for the city of Durham; as Kyla Newkirk Day for the city of Durham). I have been able to maintain a strong sense of balance mentally and emotionally throughout all my endeavors. I am grateful to my parents, coaches, teachers and educational advisory team! I trust that their investment in me will pay off with the discipline I have been able to establish in all that I do!
