I have been rowing since the beginning of my freshman year at Jackson-Reed high school (formerly Wilson HS) in Washington, DC. I originally started rowing as a way to stay in shape during the off-season of softball, which I’ve been playing since I was six. I quickly fell in love with crew because of how physical it is and the unique nature of what it is like to be a member of team that has to be so connected and in sync with each other.
I still do both softball and rowing and, with the support of all my coaches, I have been able to successfully manage participation on both my high school's varsity rowing and varsity softball teams. While exhausting and tricky to keep schedules sorted out at times, it is rewarding to contribute leadership and support to the success of both teams (as stroke seat in our varsity 8 this fall and captain and pitcher for this year’s softball team).
Being active, pushing myself physically and mentally, and having a supportive and fun team to compete on have always been important to me. Rowing really gives me all of this. I really can’t imagine not having sports in my life and have always hoped to be able to continue in college.
