Hi! My name is Gabriella Giampietro, and I am a 16 year old coxswain for East Bay Rowing Club in Barrington, Rhode Island.
Admittedly, I was nervous when I first started crew back in my freshman year of high school. I was shy, soft-spoken, and unsure of myself having moved to a new state; less than admirable qualities in a coxswain. However, I can say with confidence that becoming a coxswain is absolutely the best path I could have taken to develop my confidence and leadership skills. Taking command of a boat and developing an authoritative presence and voice helped me enormously in blossoming into the kind of leader I had only dreamed of being before. The dedication I had for crew inspired me to push myself above and beyond in school, and I attacked my studies with a renewed vigor. Before, I could have never imagined myself putting in 16 hour weeks of practice, or waking up at 5:00 am to get out early. Now, though, I relish these experiences. Every practice I seek to give my all, as my enjoyment of crew is something that remains unmatched by nearly any other extracurricular I've tried.
One of my top priorities for the future is to pursue a rigorous college education and, by extension, to join a college crew team. Building connections with a diverse community of peers, challenging myself both academically and athletically, and pushing myself to become the best student, athlete, and person I can be are all things I hope to accomplish through joining college crew. I am ready to give it my all, just as I was that first summer day back in 2020.
