Personal Statement

I’ve always been interested in crew; although, you wouldn’t think I’d know anything about it from where I grew up. My dad met my mom while he was in the Peace Corps in Kazakhstan. I was born in Uzbekistan and grew up in Armenia until moving to the United States when I was 6. However, my dad rowed in high school and college and had an erg overseas with him, so I was always playing around on it. In middle school I attended a learn-to-row day and from the moment I first got on the water, I knew I’d found my passion.

Being constantly on the water, also gave me a better appreciation of the environment and led me to an interest in environmental sustainability. After exploring different professions related to the environment, I feel that pursing Landscape Architecture will allow me to do my part but also provide a release for my creative side. My ultimate goal is to create structures that work within the environment they are built and exist in harmony with nature and not against it.

I believe that my experience as a coxswain for the PWRC Masters Racing Men’s Team, more than anything sets me apart from other coxswains and has prepared me for coxing at the collegiate level. The average age of the guys in my boat is 58. The majority of the guys are all retired military. I have two Colonels, one Lieutenant Colonel, two Captains, and a guy in the Special Forces; all of whom are used to devising the strategies, giving orders, and being obeyed. If I can get them to take my direction, listen to my commands, and trust me in my decisions – I feel I can do anything!

  • The Prince William Rowing Club is a Masters Rowing program in northern Virginia. The following is taken from the PWRC website concerning coxswains. Well trained coxswains are an essential part of a successful sweep rowing program. PWRC is committed to developing its coxswains in the same way we are committed to developing rowers. PWRC has a mix of adult and young, college-bound coxswains that still have National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) amateur eligibility. In recognition of this, PWRC has developed this policy that supports both adult and young coxswains. Coxswains are not required to pay any PWRC membership dues. Although these individuals can, on occasion, fill in as a rower, it should not become the norm or they will be asked to pay the same fees rowing members pay. PWRC considers its coxswains as assistant coaches. They are responsible for the safety of the crew and equipment from the time a boat is pulled from the racks until it is returned. In addition, coxswains are expected to reinforce and correct rowers’ technique in accordance with their head coach’s guidance.

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Sparks Winter Coxswains Only Camp
  • 12/27/19 to 12/30/19
  • (From the Sparks Website) - The focus is exclusively on coxswains This is a rowing camp where coxing skills are the only focus. Sparks ‘rents’ the team. Entire on water practices are spent on absolutely everything that goes with being the ninth seat. The art of steering, command structure, docking, dealing with conditions, and interpreting drills are only the tip of the iceberg. Coxswains can expect to learn in much the same way as doctors doing rounds in teaching hospitals. They will be put in small groups with their attending coach and present to the group during on water exercises throughout the week. Awareness: We believe awareness is the most important aspect of coxing because all coxswains are self-taught. We learn from our surroundings – from what our coaches and athletes are saying, and what we’re feeling and seeing inside, outside, and around the shell. Our curriculum emphasizes awareness via daily, detailed analysis of everything from digital recordings to inward reflections during training. Steering: Steering is absolutely essential for coxswains: the fastest distance between two points is a straight line. Beyond that, safety and shell integrity are at stake. We utilize buoyed and non-buoyed courses as well as teach steering in different wind conditions. The curriculum also addresses turns for head racing. Organization: We teach coxswains how to organize their boats effectively on the water and off to make sure they’re running efficient and effective practices and maximize potential boat speed. We measure organization by making sure that coxswains communicate clearly and effectively to achieve objectives and goals established by coaches and the team. Direction: If you can’t hear your commander on the battlefield, chaos will ensue; coxswains must construct clean and effective command structures. Coxswains are shown how to most effectively give a command and execute it in real-time scenarios on the water. Coxswains are also taught how to evaluate their audio recordings to find their own personal structure.
  • Camp/Event
  • US Rowing Olympic Development Mini-Camp
  • 9/20/19 to 9/22/19
  • The goal was to identify talented, age-based athletes with the potential to grow within the system and to provide them with the tools to row better, erg faster, and find success in the sport. Registration was open for 48 male and female athletes and two coxswains from each region.
  • Camp/Event
  • Sparks BU Rowing Camp
  • 7/09/19 to 7/13/19
  • Sparks designed the camp to allow coxswains to experience a reframing of their skill that enables them to practice better self-leadership to evaluate their skills and set goals for improvement. The first principle in their curriculum was awareness, for without it they said that none of the others are possible. From there, they oriented coxswains to their responsibilities in three key areas: steering, commands, and organization. The question was whether the coxswain could evaluate their skill in each of their areas on an objective enough level to devise goals and methods for improvement long after camp ends.
  • Camp/Event
  • Advanced Rowing Camp - Buckeye Sports Camp
  • 6/24/19 to 6/28/19
  • Five-day rowing camp with specialized separate track for coxswains. Each day consisted of two "on-the-water" sessions, with additional daily sessions on: Nutrition, Erging, Core Strength Training, and Racing. The camp ended with a mini-regatta of camp participants.

Training

  • Coxing and Rowing
  • 6 years
  • I began rowing on the erg in 6th Grade at Lake Ridge Middle School (LRMS). They had a Crew Club where students would learn how to row on the erg. I was a member of the LRMS Crew Club all three years in middle school. Then in 8th Grade I began coxing for Prince William Rowing Club (PWRC), a masters rowing program. I have been coxing for PWRC ever since. In 9th Grade I joined the Woodbridge High School Crew Team and coxed for both the Varsity and Novice Teams. In 10th Grade I was the Women's 1st Varsity 8 coxswain. I received a Varsity Letter my Sophomore year.
