Personal Statement

Soccer has been a foundational part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a junior at Mountain Lakes High School in New Jersey, I have the privilege of playing soccer, lacrosse, and basketball, but it is soccer that holds a special place in my heart. Coming from a long line of soccer players from Colombia, the sport is woven into the fabric of my family’s history. My great-grandfather played for one of Colombia’s early professional teams, and since then, soccer has been passed down through generations. My father, who has been my coach since I was two years old, has not only taught me the technical aspects of the game but also instilled in me a deep passion for it and a dedication to hard work, perseverance, and a love for the game.

Soccer is more than just a sport to me; it’s a way of life. Over the years, my commitment to the game has been unwavering, and the countless hours of practice, both individually and with my team, have taught me valuable lessons about discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Whether it's pushing myself through a challenging drill, bouncing back from a tough loss, or celebrating a hard-earned victory with my teammates, soccer has shaped me into a more determined and focused individual.

Playing multiple sports, including lacrosse and basketball, has helped me develop versatility as an athlete, and these sports have contributed to my overall physical and mental growth. However, soccer remains my primary focus because it’s where my heart lies. The dynamic nature of the game, the strategy involved, and the camaraderie built with teammates all fuel my passion for soccer. I take pride in my technical abilities on the field, my vision of the game, and my dedication to constantly improving. As a versatile player, I strive to be a valuable asset to my team, both as a leader on the field and a supportive teammate off it.

In addition to my athletic pursuits, academics play a crucial role in my life. My father has always emphasized the importance of balancing athletics with education, and I have embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly. I aim to not only excel on the soccer field but also in the classroom. My ultimate goal is to play soccer at the collegiate level while pursuing a rigorous academic program that challenges me intellectually. I believe that a strong education is the foundation for a successful future, and I am determined to make the most of the opportunities that come my way.

Looking ahead, I aspire to attend a college that values both athletic and academic excellence. I want to be part of a soccer program where I can contribute to the team’s success while also growing as a student and person. Beyond college, I see myself using the skills and experiences I’ve gained through soccer and education to become a contributing member of society. I hope to give back to the communities I am a part of by engaging in meaningful work and acts of service, whether through my professional endeavors or volunteer work. Soccer has taught me the importance of leadership, collaboration, and resilience, qualities I plan to carry with me throughout my life.

In conclusion, soccer has shaped me into the person I am today. It has provided me with invaluable life lessons and a sense of purpose. I am excited about the opportunity to continue my journey at the collegiate level, where I hope to make an impact both on and off the field. I am committed to working hard, staying true to my values, and pursuing excellence in all areas of my life. Playing college soccer will allow me to continue my family’s legacy while creating my own path, one that blends my love for the game with my passion for learning and community involvement.
