Personal Statement
As far back as I can remember, I have been infatuated with water. Whether it is a river, lake, creek, ocean, or pool – I am fearlessly drawn to the water. Naturally, therefore, swimming has been second nature to me. At the age of five, I began competing in swimming year-round, and I have not taken a break since then. I train because I love it – not because I feel obligated to compete. Happy training has led me to very positive results at swim meets. I have learned that attitude is a huge factor in my success. I also have learned that training and participating in meets helps satisfy my instinctive desire to compete.
I carry that sense of competition into other areas of my life, as well. I enjoy coaching tremendously. I have coached summer league teams for the past two summers. I enjoy younger swimmers and instructing them. There are few better feelings than watching a swimmer that you have trained utilize the skills you have taught and succeed in a meet. The joy I have experienced helping younger swimmers has reaffirmed my goal of attending medical school and working in pediatrics. I enjoy learning, particularly in the areas of math and science. And my healthy sense of competition helps motivate me in academics too.
