Hi, my name is Jocelyn Matousek and everyday I strive to perform my best both on the track and in the classroom alike. Throughout my high school career, I have learned the importance of perseverance, determination, sacrifice, grit, and most importantly, belief in self. As an athlete with a heart murmur and severe asthma, pain is never far away and is constantly telling me : "Just stop. Why continue? You know you will never be enough." For a while, I believed those discouraging words and let my asthma hold me back. For instance, in my sophmore XC season, only two times I ran under 14:00, and only once my freshman track season. Begining of track season in '24 I looked at my past performance and then, something clicked. The true reason I was holding myself back was lack of belief in myself. From that moment on, I began to have confidence, and realized I was far stronger than I thought. This mindset completely changed and led to my accomplishment of running every time under 14:00 for the past track and XC season. Just recently, I ran a sub 13 minute 3200! When I discovered my time, I became overwhelmed with emotions because I never thought I would be able to run that time due to my physical setbacks. I may not have started out the fastest, but these last couple of seasons have shown me that I can truly accomplish what myself and others deemed impossible. I will continue to embrace these values of belief as I drive to improve in my career as both an athlete and student. I hope to attend a college or university that will drive me to continue to develop mentally, physically, and spiritually. If it be God's will, I hope to further my running and academic careers in college, a place where I feel that I may be able to truly live as myself.
Your future athlete,
Jocelyn Matousek
