Hello my name is Selena, I’ve always loved running track and field and competing in such a challenging sport that’s not only physically challenging but also mentally challenging. Track is somewhat of a family tradition, we have a family belief that, if you could walk you could run. I have been running track competitively since I was 9 years old. I have traveled all over the country and competed against some great competition. I still can recall in 2010 when I made my first Junior Olympic as an individual. I didn’t place but I told myself one day I’m going to be on the award stand. At the 2014 AAU Junior Olympic, it happened, my 4x800 relay placed 8th overall, providing me he opportunity to be on the awards stand. The one thing I took away was that if you work hard enough, anything is achievable.
Everyone in my family has run track from my dad to my great grandfather. Track has opened many doors in my life such as creating great friendships, being a good teammate and helping other to succeed. The greatest thing I have learned in track is how to be a leader. Leadership is one of the most important skills any athlete should possess. When a teammate falls, pick them up. If a teammate struggling, motivate them. These are some of the attributes I hope to bring to any team I represent as a student-athlete.
My goal outside of track life is to become a doctor. I’m currently interested in becoming a surgical doctor. I know this will be a lot of work and determination but this is something I’m striving for. My mother is a nurse practitioner, which makes me want to follow in her footsteps into the medical field. These are some of the reasons why I would like to attend a competitive college, so that it will prepare on the track, but most importantly, in the classroom as I transition into the next phase of my life.
There are many track programs around the county, but I’m looking for a family oriented program that is going to nurture me, and provide me the opportunity to be the best student-athlete that I can be.
