My coach introduced me to Volleyball in 3rd grade. In the beginning it was fun! Then the fun increased from Following in a circle to moving around the court and different positions. I discovered Setting, I KNEW it was the position for me.
Junior High were hard years. I didn’t get to Set. I was one of the tallest girls, can jump and play different position. I felt I couldn’t do anything right after years of being told I had hands of Gold. My self confidence was gone and STRESS was introduced. I almost gave up. I love Volleyball, so I fought the tears back and kept trying to earn the Setter position! This was my most childish stage, thinking of my self and what I wanted and not what the team needed.
Freshman year I was one of the Starting JV Setters! Sophomore year a Starting Setter on Varsity while a Setter was out with COVID. The reason I Love being a Setter is it fits my personality. I'm a very chilled person. You don’t get a lot of recognition like a Hitter; I like being a shadow. The Joy of being a Setter is when your teammates come up to you and says” I love your sets!” Or “Your sets make me feel like I can be a Hitter!” Knowing I helped someone feel a little of the joy, I feel when I play. That’s when I know I'm doing my job!
UPDATE 2022: I thought I had matured over the last two years. I was wrong I still have a ways to go. This year as a junior my position is Setter (which is still my passion). I have stepped out of the Mindset "I am a Setter!" I feel I am become a more rounded Setter. I am Blocking and Hitting. I may be one of the shorter girls now, but I will do what a can to support the team, and continue to grow.
