Personal Statement
Volleyball has been a big part of my family since before I was born. My parents coached high school ball and played together until my brother, sister and I were born. They got back into coaching when my sister started club. I started playing a couple years later and they have been part of my coaching staffs since. I started at the age of 8 playing on my sister’s 12U Ohio Valley Region team, passing back row. I have never looked back, playing club every year since and school ball starting in the 7th grade. I love the excitement the game provides and being part of a close-knit squad where everyone shares a common love and works towards common goals. I feel my biggest strength in the game is my overall skill set. I have hit outside and serve received all six rotations since my 1st match as a freshman in high school. My defense has always been a strength, and I am getting stronger, which has greatly improved my hitting and blocking. I take my leadership role very seriously and have been a team captain (speaking) since my sophomore season. In our school, volleyball has never been a perennial power, so I am doing everything I can to push people in the right direction, even if I am not having a great day myself, I still feel the need to be there for my team. We are starting to see results too, Johnstown won its first District Title my freshman season, and we will definitely be in the hunt this season too.
I have given plenty of thought to what I would like to study in college, but as of right now, I am undecided. I can’t wait to be in a new setting and start a new chapter in my life, academically and with volleyball. In high school, teachers hold your hand through your work, and I am excited to be more independent and get out of my comfort zone, which to me, points back to being on a college volleyball court. I have been playing with people I have been going to school with my whole life, and am eager to make new friendships that will last a lifetime and am excited to see where this next step takes me.
