I hope to be a safe adult for young athletes as a coach, athletic director, or something alike. Whether they're phenomenal or intolerable, the effect a coach has on their players is massive. Having been subject to both extremes, I understand the sheer weight a position in athletics holds over teens who are struggling to find their place in the world.
I’ve always wanted to play volleyball in college, but growing up in a small town like Baker City limits opportunities when it comes to athletics. On top of that our YMCA, school, and club teams operate in disharmony; making it difficult for a kid like me to excel in their sport. I was fortunate enough to find a club team in Idaho that wanted me. With an amazing support system, hard work, and a good deal of luck, I was able to fundraise enough money to pay my fees and organize a school schedule that allowed me to drive four hours twice a week to attend practice. I am so grateful and proud that I got to do this, but sadly, not every kid is as privileged as I am. I put everything I had into volleyball, and it worked out; which is what motivates me to provide the same possibilities for other kids. With a degree in sports management, I will create a fluid program in small towns that ensures everyone, who is willing to put in the work, will have equal opportunity when it comes to athletics.
