Especially this past year, I have discovered a new confidence in myself both on and off the court. It began this past summer when I helped teach younger kids at my karate school. At first, I second-guessed myself at every question of theirs that I answered and had trouble getting them to focus on doing karate. By the end of the summer, I was able to gain the confidence necessary to no longer doubt my own teaching and to keep their focus on the tasks at hand. This experience translated to my volleyball life, especially since my high school coach depended on me to take care of organizing our defense as the libero, and to handle the emotional aspect of my teammates as a captain. I helped my teammates with their passing and defense whenever I could and gave advice to some of our JV players as well.
I firmly believe in leading by example, both skill-wise by giving my best effort on every play, and energy-wise by keeping a positive influence, spirit, and body language on the court. I can be depended on to always try to help my teammates get better and to be open to criticisms by others. In these upcoming college years, I hope to continue to improve my skills, make life-long friendships, and spend more time playing a sport that I love. Deciding to play volleyball has been such a pivotal moment in my life and I really can’t imagine my life without it.
Academically, I want to be challenged by my professors and peers in a competitive yet friendly environment. I am looking for schools that will allow me to explore a wide variety of interests, primarily anthropology and archaeology of classical civilizations, chemistry, and physics. I’d like to be part of a school that can accommodate all of these academic interests, in addition to having a diverse student population and lively student organizations.
