Personal Statement
From a very early age I have been very decisive on what I love and what drives me. My name is Riley Powell and I am a future collegiate volleyball player.
I first became interested in volleyball when my dad put me in the sport in the 4th grade. At first I didn’t know what to expect and I wasn’t very interested. But once I started playing, I quickly fell in love with volleyball. Playing made me realize that I could be a team player and cheer on everyone on the court. I have a lot of fun at games and I give my all on and off the court.
Academically, I hope to excel in all of my high school courses to prepare me for a successful college career with aspirations of furthering my education past a high school diploma.
Although I am young, I’ve had my fair share of obstacles to overcome to become the person and player I am today. I‘ve had to mature and understand that practice makes progress and it is giving me the work ethic I need on and off the court. Volleyball and being on a team has shaped me into the person I am today. I have had to work hard on my school work to maintain my high GPA while balancing my sport and maintaining my hobbies and interests. My hobbies and interests include volleyball, math, and volunteering. I am passionate about pop culture both current and past decades. I feel as though this allows me the ability to relate to my peers as well as adults.
I understand that I will have to battle to further my volleyball career. I will put in the time and the effort and focus to give myself a fighting chance at playing at the collegiate level. I attended a basketball camp one summer and at that camp, Nancy Lieberman said, “I respect everyone, but I fear no one”. This stuck with me because I know that I have the ability to push myself in ways I never thought were possible.
