I can still remember the first time I ever held volleyball and started to play. I was just six years old when my dad introduced me to the sport that would change my life. It was fun to play with friends, but even at that young age, I wanted to do more with the sport. I was eight when I began playing with a club team, Borinquen Coqui (Puerto Rico), and I immediately knew that this was not going to be just a hobby. I decided then that was exactly what I wanted to do with my time and athleticism. Since that first club, I have played for travel / select teams in Vaqueros Bayamon, NVVA, Areyto Volley, and for the varsity team at my high school. Recently, I was selected as an alternate for the 2015 Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association (CHRVA) High Performance Team. I want to continue to play in college and, hopefully, later on as a professional…this is my passion. Throughout the years, I have played two positions: outside hitter and passer/libero. Playing these positions allowed me to hone my ability to control the ball both aggressively and passively. As a hitter, I never shy away from the challenge of ending a rally, especially under pressure plays. I pride myself on focusing and controlling the ball to keep it in the zone when playing passer/libero. My determination and relentlessness keeps rallies going during defensive plays. I have always understood that one of the secrets to success is the ability to listen to those who mentor and coach me. My respect for them provides an added motivation to excel and make them proud. My growth and progress has relied on it. Additionally, I see my team’s motivation as an integral part of our success; therefore, I have always given special attention to boosting their esteem by cheering them on in order to achieve our goals as a team. The discipline and focus that I have learned through volleyball has carried into my activities as a student. I am an active participant in the classroom, which helps me stay engaged and curious. I volunteer to help other students and do the best I can on every single task the teacher gives us. I am a member of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and the English Reading Club to stay involved in academic and extracurricular activities. I am fully bilingual in written and spoken English and Spanish. For me, success translates into doing what I love and I am hoping to have the extraordinary opportunity to study Biology and play volleyball. I am steadfast on finding the perfect partnership with a university where I could receive a quality education and embrace my skills as a volleyball player. I cannot think of a better way to make the people that have given me so much support, proud.
