Hi my name is Porsche Johnson and I am 16 years old. I have been around volleyball all my life. Literally. My mom played volleyball in high school and college which helped me understand the sport. My passion for the sport grew over time and at times I had to step back to progress forward.
In the beginning, I was not a fan of volleyball because I felt like I was forced to play it. When I was twelve my mom drove me to a team’s tryout but didn’t tell me I was trying out until we arrived at the gym. Although I made the team, that year I decided not to play. Another year I made the courageous decision to play down a level which was one of the best decisions I ever made. That was the year I found my love for volleyball. My team was not good but we loved the sport and played our best. We enjoyed each other.
I have progressed tremendously since that time. I progressed so much that I am now on an 18’s team at the age of 16. Although I currently play middle and right side with my primary position being middle, I have learned to be open to playing any position. With any position that I am in, I fight to keep a ball in play. Coaches have come up to me and told me if I put in the work I can play D1. That is something many volleyball players want to hear.
In school, I keep a steady 3.1 GPA. I am also in a club at my school called Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) where we do volunteer work, participate in competitions and I am an officer.
To be honest, my biggest goal is not to play D1. My goal is to play the sport I love at a college that I love, at whatever level that is. I’m still giving it my all and putting in a lot of work so I can play volleyball in college. I love volleyball with a passion and I know I was meant to play it.
