Ellyssa Harken '21 Recruiting Profile

There are three things that set me apart from other recruits and make me a great candidate for your volleyball team. My determination, my leadership, and my joyful heart. Firstly, my determination. I have always been extremely determined in everything that is set before me. Whether it's a debate tournament, a poetry recitation, a theatre tryout, a cross country race, or a volleyball game, I always give my all in everything I do no matter the circumstance. My determination is such that it will inspire the rest of your team and push others to give it their all as well. My determination points to my ability to be a strong leader. My leadership capabilities have always been a big part of my volleyball career. I was team captain for varsity teams my 7th and 8th grade years as well as my 10th-12th grade years. I mainly lead by example. From always arriving early to set up the nets, to always being the last one out of the gym to tear down the nets, to never letting a ball drop, to leading team bonding events, to showing respect to coaches, refs, and opponents, to encouraging all those around me to be their best version of themselves, leadership has always been one of my strengths. I know I can use my leadership abilities to grow and strengthen your team. Lastly, my joyful heart is one of my strong assets. My senior year, I completely tore my ACL and MCL playing basketball which put me out for volleyball recruiting. I still showed up to every basketball practice and every game with my crutches, some ice, my knee brace, and a smile. I embraced this trial with joy and used it to show my team how important they were to me by still showing up. I will help your team keep things lighthearted even amidst trials. All in all, I know I have the ability to play collegiate volleyball and make an impact on your volleyball program. My determination, my leadership, and my joyful heart are all factors of this.
