My name is Mary Smith, I'm a junior at Cave Spring High School, Roanoke, Virginia. My number one goal is to wrestle at the collegiate level and my number two goal is to become a naval officer via the Navy ROTC program. I started with BJJ when I was 7 years old and transitioned over to wrestling when I was a freshman in high school. Wrestling has become a big part of my life and has shaped me into who I am today, I am a great team player, and always show good sportsmanship toward my teammates, coaches, and opponents. When I first started wrestling, I was the only girl on the team and wrestled only boys my freshman year. My sophomore year I was able to influence two of my friends to join, that year (2023) was the first time that Virginia High School League (VHSL) had a sanctioned women's state tournament which I placed 5th in the 170-pound weight class. My junior year I wrestled in two all girls tournaments, Ladycat Invitational at Radford High School, Radford, VA, which I placed 1st in the 185-pound weight class and the VHSL girls state championship at Gar-Field High School, Woodbridge, VA, which I placed 5th in the 185-pound weight class.
