Hello, my name is Seth Miller and I will be a Senior at Wheatmore High School and I am currently a Wrestler and a Soccer player. I aspire to wrestle at the college level and I am considering majoring in Sports Medicine. I would like to attend a college that offers both wrestling and my choice of future study.
I have been wrestling since the age of 4 and I fell in love with the sport then. I wrestled in a youth wrestling club for almost all of my elementary school years and I continued in Middle School. In both my 7th and 8th grade school seasons, I won the conference tournament. When I moved up to the High School level it had been a dramatic change in the way I saw wrestling. I began my freshman year wrestling at weight 106 and was the only freshman rostered on the varsity team, so it was a lot of hard work. As freshman year went on, I had to wrestle off a senior about 3 times for his spot because I felt like I needed to make myself known. I ended up staying second string which made me work harder for the next year. In my sophomore year, the work I put in as a freshman just solidified how much it meant for me to work hard and want to always challenge myself by wrestling kids that were a little to a lot more experienced at the high school level to make myself better. During the first tournament of my sophomore season I ended up getting a concussion and I found myself always trying to get back in the room because I missed it so much. The first week of therapy was awful because i literally was told to do nothing. After about week 2 or 3 I was running up and down the hallways trying to make sure that I would stay on weight because I had a goal of placing at regionals and then moving on to the state tournament. After I was released from my concussion I went back on the mat drilling hard and winning more matches because I wanted to reach the goals I set for myself. I placed 3rd at weight class 115 in my region and advanced to the state tournament.
Training for the state tournament entailed 2 hours of practice after school with the team every day and then going to club wrestling and training for 2 more hours. I knew that my dedication had to match my drive to do the best I could. I made it to the second round on the second day and I had lost by a major decision, and I was all beaten up. Something had happened to my knee and when I went to see the athletic trainer he told me that he didn't think I'd be able to move on due to the swelling in my knee (later diagnosed as pre-patellar bursitis). Everyone was telling me that I shouldn't move on but I didn't put in all the hard work for nothing, so I continued. I made it all the way to the third period but lost by points, and I was in a lot of pain and couldn't really walk, but I wasn't really mad that I lost because I had accomplished my goal for the year by making it to the state tournament.
After the wrestling season was over I thought so much about wanting more and being a state champ and wrestling in college. I am a goal setter, not only in sports but in school as well, I always strive to do my best and I'm a hard worker and willing to put in the time to achieve my goals. I am recognized as a scholar athlete and academics is a very important part of who I am as a student and athlete.
I continued to keep that drive and dedication moving into my junior year. I had worked harder than i think i ever have before. I was constantly choosing wrestling over school, which i noticed cant always be a good thing. My junior year was the hardest on me due to strriving to do better and also keeping good grades. I had a lot tougher compition this year and i went down from the weight class 126 to 120 to keep a constant challenge. I won my first tournament that i was a seed 7 at, which was Glenn high school individual tournament, and after that i wanted more. For the remainder of the year i worked harder and harder to make it further than i did at the state tournament the previous year. I trained harder than ever before to make sure i had a spot in the tournament. As i was training for the regional tournament, which at the time was 2 days away, i was wrestling my teamate in a live match and he had spralled and his chin cut the back of my head open. At the time i for sure thought my season was over. I ended up with 6 stitches in my head and in a lot of pain after the medicine wore off. I pushed through everything, the pain , the stitches, and the constant hits to the head. I wrestled in the regional tournament and made it to the qualifying round a lost by 3. i placed fourth in my region and had advanced to the state tournament. I made it farther than i had the previous year and missed placing by 2 points.
Moving on to my senior year i will continue to work hard, or even harder. I plan on reatching 100+ wins this season, and i also plan on placing/winning at the state tournament at weight class 126.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile.
Sincerely,
Seth Miller
