Personal Statement

After completing my first year of college baseball, I have learned a lot about myself and what it takes to be a collegiate student-athlete. I strive to be the best that I can be on and off the field. After earning a starting position in centerfield, I have proven that I can compete with collegiate level competition and be successful in doing so. Not only am I a student of the game, I also take great pride in my academics and work extremely hard to succeed in the classroom.  I have been blessed with positive, dedicated coaches and parents who have stressed the importance of being a student first. I am a logical thinker and use this in my decision making, however I am also open-minded and coachable.  Being an all-around player, I believe I can be an asset to any college program.

  • Great job overall at camp! The coaching staff here at Dayton really appreciated your time and effort throughout the event. In the outfield you showed good footwork with an above average arm. At the plate you showed that you can stay inside the ball really well. You can get a little caught up sometimes with your swing. Try to get the barrel out and stay through the ball as long as possible. You also showed above average speed at the event. Thank you again for coming out to camp!

  • Body Type: 6-foot-1, 165-pound athletic frame. Swing Mechanics: Swings it from the right side, using a fluid/athletic load. Hit: Loose, whippy swing with feel for contact. Good athlete with the ability to run into contact often. Stays inside the baseball well. Can get a bit tied up at times but still finds his way to contact. Natural tools are above average for class. Power: 91.8 mph was top exit velocity in BP, living in the upper 80s. Easy gap pop. Offensive Projection: Run producer potential. Field: Easy actions in the outfield with ball skills on par for class. Maintains tempo into approach and through his one-handed play through. Throw: Clean arm with jump out of the hand. 88 mph arm to home plate. Defensive Projection: Multiple Spots. https://www.prepbaseballreport.com/profiles/OH/Ethan-Spears-8054963712

  • Body Type: 6-foot-1, 165-pound athletic frame with room to add. Swing Mechanics: Simple loading sequence that incorporates a back load to hands during his controlled stride. Hit: Balanced launch. Athletic stroke with natural whip/burst to the barrel. Ball jumped to both sides of the field. Even more to come as he continues to add strength to frame. Swing showed up in game as well. Power: Gap to gap. 92.5 off the bat in BP. Offensive Projection: Multiple Roles. Run: 4.28. Above average runner. Field: In the outfield he plays with rhythm and fluid actions. Hands work well. Looks comfortable out there. Solid defender. Throw: 84 mph arm strength from the outfield. Loose arm that projects for more strength. Defensive Projection: Multiple Spots.

  • Medium frame with lean, athletic build; body projects well moving forward. Ran 60 yard dash in 7.11 seconds. Hits from slightly open stance, good stride into swing, quick hands, compact bat speed, stationary hand load, shows good ability to get barrel turned, whole-field approach on a line, good contact skills. Worked out in the outfield, fields off to side, footwork will get timid at times, works through well, shows arm strength from full stroke, clocked up to 79 mph on throws. Excellent student.

  • Subject: Camp Evaluation Ethan, Thanks again for coming to our camp. I really appreciate you spending the day with us and hope that you had a good experience at camp. Below is the data we collected from you during the evaluation and also some general thoughts, which are a combination of the entire coaching staffs' notes. 60: 7.12 Exit Velo: 78 Position Velo: 80 Position notes: Showed solid, accurate arm from OF. Good glove actions, with longer, outfield-like arm actions in IF, which is to be expected since you play multiple positions. Swing notes: Good set-up and approach with solid bat speed. The foundation is here and is sound. A lot of room to grow and improve as you get stronger. Pitching Notes: FB 75-77, CB 62-63, CH 68-69 Very talented player. Excited to see growth the next few years. Velo will increase once he learns to engage his lower half and create more separation. Very good upside. Overall: Very solid 2021 prospect. Showed good speed, decent bat speed, and performed well on mound. Showed the athleticism to play multiple positions. We look forward to following your development and hope you come back to a future camp of ours! • A righty swinger that starts in a balanced setup. Good athlete with obvious projectability in the box. Movements are fluid and well timed prior to launch, creating both timing and balance. Strength stands out through zone as the ball jumps off his bat to both fields. One of the loudest BPs we saw on the day. Has a chance to be dynamic once he twitches up. In the infield he has fluid actions with the ability to move out of his funnel and maintain them. Ball skills are developing. Skill set profiles at third base presently.
