Hello, my name is Joseph "JD" DeVane Jr and I am a 2026 student athlete at Caravel Academy; I primarily play football, but also compete in basketball, run track and throw shot-put. My interest in football came from my father who played at Cheyney University as a defensive lineman. Through football, I have learned mental toughness from my coaches who were tough on me, but helped me grow. Also, my parents have influenced my work ethic as they operate a successful business.
My character and attitude are things that I strive to better everyday, as I constantly do things in my school and community, that can improve my self. I am a part of the Young Leaders Institute in the Boys & Girls Club in the Newark/Bear area, and I volunteer with the Delaware Ducks Drug Prevention Program. In addition, faith is important to me as I attend weekly church services at my home church Highway Gospel community temple in west Chester Pennsylvania.
Academically, I work hard studying and reviewing my work, as a result I consistently receive above average grades in all of my classes. The emphasis my parents have instilled in me about academics have made learning more comfortable. I excel in my math classes and science classes. My teachers always complement my effort and attitude as I strive to be a great student.
Athletically, in my freshman season, the Caravel Academy Buccaneers, went 12-1, as we lost in the 2A state championship in Delaware. I played in all 13 games as a starter on special teams and a role player at inside and outside linebacker. In addition I was able to start my first high school game at linebacker when I filled in for our defensive player of the year when he was injured. This first year of high school football was a unbelievable as well as a learning experience. My biggest take away was not to ever take an opportunity for granted. In my sophomore season my team went 13-0, winning the 2A state championship, where I achieved 2nd team all-district.
I believe that my talent, work ethic, and perseverance can make a valuable asset and a great teammate to the current student athletes in your program.
