Personal Statement
Hi! My name is Kayla. I am from a small city in the small state of West Virginia, and my dream since I discovered softball at the local little league was to play in college. I remember the first softball game I witnessed; my cousin was a nine year old pitcher, and she was pitching in the little league championship game. I was so mesmerized by the sport, and I still am to this day.
I have always had high expectations for myself, but the times that shaped my character the most were when they weren’t met.
The ability to be a leader without the title is something I pride myself on. Growing up, I was almost always one of the, if not the, youngest on every team I played for. So I hardly received the title of captain. As a freshman on my high school team, who was losing most of the games we played, my teammates would walk on and off the field, not swing hard during their at bats, and stop caring; which isn’t acceptable.
At first, I started falling into the disappointment of us losing and never had faith in us winning; every win became a shock. One game, after hitting my first home run in high school, and still losing 11-1, I started to look around and see everyone lazily moving on and off the field, and I felt a fire rise within me. I would try to pump my teammates up, but nothing I tried helped. So, I made my role on the team as the bubbly, cheerful, excited freshman, no matter the score.
I feel as if I would be a great candidate for any college team because of my ability to be a hardworking leader/role mode. Thank you for reading!
