2020 HighlightsMy name is Martina Torello-Viera and I am 16 years old. Born and raised in New Jersey into an Italian family, I grew up embracing the American culture while keeping a strong connection with my European heritage. I have always been swimming through the Metropolitan LSC. I was just six years old when I started swimming at my local pool club in summer league, and I had not only felt an instant connection with the sport, but I fell in love with it. I had to keep swimming, so I joined my first competitive swim team the following fall. The more I swam, the more the passion for swimming grew and also the love for my team, and my coaches. While for a couple of years I kept pursuing another passion of mine, skiing, becoming one the best U12 girls in NJ, when I turned 12, I broke my dad’s heart, my ski coach, and decided to just focus on swimming. Since then, I have had the same coaches, and we truly have a special bond. I would like to continue swimming in college since the passion for this sport and the desire to keep improving and reaching new goals are my motivation to be the best I can be, inside and outside of the pool. In practice and races, I find myself to always put my best foot forward. Along with trying to be my best self, I try to motivate others and put a smile on their face, as I always have one on mine. This sport has taught me so much: time management, what hard work really is, the importance of self-confidence, friendships, sportsmanship, and motivation. Swimming has brought so much into my life, and I want to continue to pursue my swimming career through college and hopefully put a smile on my new team’s face and build another strong bond with my new coaches and teammates.
