Growing up I have always seen myself as a student athlete, I was always outside, whether it was swimming with my parents, jumping on the trampoline, or playing games with my friends. Although I didn't know what sport I wanted to pursue, I always knew I would be doing something active as I got older.
I started swimming at the age of 7, but only to learn swim strokes and water safety. As my mom ALWAYS got us to lessons early, I was able to watch the high school swim team finish their practice. That's when I knew I wanted to swim just like them. What I didn't realize was the hard work and drive it would take to reach that goal. I wanted to be the best swimmer that I could be. I went to every extra dryland, every extra swim practice. I ran on the days we were off and set goals for myself in and out of the water. I did this not only for me, but for my team. I wanted to be sure that when I stepped up on the block, that I had done everything I could to prepare. Whether it was an individual event or a relay, I had to have no doubts that I could have done anything differently or worked any harder.
Swim didn't just prepare me for swim, however. Swimming has helped me not only improve my athletic ability, but has also helped my character. I am more patient with myself and teammates. I understand that we all bring different talents to the water. I am, overall, just a better person because of swim.
The dedication and work ethic I learned in the water helped me in my studies, too. I never walk into a class without my homework done or go into a test knowing I could have studied more. I get my work done and prepare. I pay attention in class and take more notes, always trying to go that extra mile.
Swim isn't just swim to me, its my family, my home. My dream is to take swim to the next level: collegiate level swimming. Ever since that 7 year old watched high school practice, I've driven myself to be the best for me and for my team. I know I have the work ethic and drive to achieve that dream.
