Growing up in Connecticut, soccer dominates as the primary sport for little kids to play. Like most of my friends, I started playing soccer at the age of 5 and told everyone I was going to play in high school and college. My parents are former volleyball players and they always said they would never push me to play if I didn't want to, but offered me the opportunity if I was interested. I grew up around the sport, spending countless hours in the gym with my parents (and grandmother) who all played and coached. The summer before my freshman year of high school, I was going to soccer captains practices and my dad asked me to play in an outdoor grass doubles tournament with him. I said yes and I was hooked. I will never forget the day I went to my parents and said "so don't be mad, but I think I want to play volleyball in high school." They smiled and said "if that's what you want", then went and celebrated! I became addicted to the sport, learning all I could in a short amount of time, but enough to make my high school team and start as a freshman on varsity.
I love all sports, but volleyball gives me happiness and joy that other sports don't always offer. I love playing with my friends on my high school team, meeting new club teammates each year and travelling with them, and playing doubles all summer with players off all ages. I look up to the former college players that come out each weekend to play, and have learned so much about the sport, how to overcome adversity, and how to handle myself around all different players.
I want to bring my love and enthusiasm of the sport to college with me, continuing to make great friends and grow as a player and as a person.
