Personal Statement

My name is Dana Howling Wolf Keller and I am Native American from the MHA Nation of North Dakota. I was a foster kid and adopted by my parents, John & Patty Keller when I was 8 years old after being their foster kid for 4 years. My Mom, Patty was a NCAA D2 college athletic director when I arrived and I lived in the gym with her. I had the best opportunity to be mentored and nurtured by amazing student-athletes and coaches. I saw first hand how hard work pays off and that respect, teamwork, and discipline are all part of the game. I grew up playing soccer but my love for volleyball grew when I was able to play club volleyball at 11 years old. I love in volleyball that you are working as an individual yet you must work together as a team. Volleyball is organized chaos and I love that about the game. I am most proud of my work ethic and positivity that I display as part of my team, whenever I am not in the game you will see me standing on the sidelines cheering for my team. My serve is one of the best part of my game but I really struggled getting my serve over the net when I first started playing volleyball so I worked very hard in the off season and watched a lot of YouTube clips to now have a very strong serve and I am able to target anywhere on the court to serve it to as well. In club volleyball I always help out at the score table (I love keeping score) and I am the first person to congratulate my teammate or lift them up with positive encouragement. I love being the setter because I am able to set my teammates up for success and I have worked very hard on my defense and offensive skills as well so I am a strong all around player. I want to be a volleyball All-American but I also want to be Miss. America! I work hard in school too which is hard for me due to my learning disabilities but I never give up and I always put forth my best effort!

  • I was selected to be on the metro team for the Bay State games. I was the youngerst player on the team and while I did not get to play in the culminating tournament, the 10 practices I was able to participate in with all the older girls and the two college coaches was amazing. I learned alot and gained new skills and friends too!

  • my team struggled in the beginning and lost 2 games on Friday. Our starting outside hitter and our power player tour her ACL last tournament so many of the girls mentally though we could not win without her. I helped rally my team together and after the first day we won all of our matches and I am really looking forward to our next tournament because I know my team can be successful when we all work together.

  • My team was doing great and then our outside hitter who most people would say is our "Franchise player" tore her ACL - it was bad, she went down screaming and many of the girls on my team got real upset - like crying and saying they can't play now and our team sucks because Nia was hurt. I huddled everyone together and tried to calm everyone down. My coach was tending to Nia so I kept telling my team that we had to focus one play at a time and not worry about the games. We just won the first match and it was 7-3 us in the second match. We really looked awful the first 10 plays after Nia got hurt and it was 7-13 and it was my turn to serve. I served 10 aces in a row and then it was 17-13 our team up. My team wound up losing that match 27-25 but we played really hard and went into the 3rd match and fought and lost 15-13. We won the two games the following day and came in 4th in the tournament because of losing that one game. My coach and my parents told me how proud they were of me because I lead the team both on the court and in our hearts. I am pretty proud of myself too!

  • I loved going to this event because at my high school I really do not have hitters or middles to set that are taller than me ( I am the tallest on my team) and I was able to run some amazing plays with the other girls at the showcase and I learned from college coaches so I could get critical feedback to help me get better.
