Personal Statement

My Name is Dana Howling Wolf Keller, and I am a proud Native American from the MHA Nation of North Dakota. My journey began in the foster care system, and I was adopted at the age of eight by my incredible parents, John and Patty Keller, after spending four years in their care as a foster child. From the moment I joined their family, my life changed for the better.

My mom, Patty, was an NCAA Division II college athletic director, and I spent countless hours by her side in the gym. I was surrounded by inspiring student-athletes and dedicated coaches who modeled what it means to work hard, show respect, and be a great teammate. These early experiences shaped my love for sports, especially volleyball.

Although I grew up playing soccer, my passion for volleyball ignited when I began playing club at age 11. What I love most about volleyball is that it’s a beautiful balance of individuality and teamwork. The game is organized chaos, and I thrive in that environment. As a setter, I take pride in setting up my teammates for success. I’ve worked hard to become a strong all-around player, improving both my offensive and defensive skills.

One of my proudest achievements is my serve. When I first started, I struggled just to get the ball over the net. But I didn’t give up—I trained hard during the off-season, studied YouTube videos, and now my serve is one of the strongest parts of my game. I can place it anywhere on the court. Off the court, I’m the teammate cheering the loudest from the sidelines and the first to offer encouragement. I even love helping at the score table—I genuinely enjoy keeping score and supporting the team however I can.

My goals are big. I want to become a volleyball All-American and Miss America. I also work hard in the classroom, even though I face learning challenges. School hasn’t always been easy, but I never let that stop me. I give my best effort every day and currently have a 3.8 GPA.

I am proud of my work ethic, my positivity, and my commitment to lifting others up. I know that with resilience, heart, and determination, I can achieve anything I set my mind to.

  • my team struggled in the beginning and lost 2 games on Friday. Our starting outside hitter and our power player tour her ACL last tournament so many of the girls mentally though we could not win without her. I helped rally my team together and after the first day we won all of our matches and I am really looking forward to our next tournament because I know my team can be successful when we all work together.

  • Grand Prix
  • 2/10/24 to 2/11/24
  • My team was doing great and then our outside hitter who most people would say is our "Franchise player" tore her ACL - it was bad, she went down screaming and many of the girls on my team got real upset - like crying and saying they can't play now and our team sucks because Nia was hurt. I huddled everyone together and tried to calm everyone down. My coach was tending to Nia so I kept telling my team that we had to focus one play at a time and not worry about the games. We just won the first match and it was 7-3 us in the second match. We really looked awful the first 10 plays after Nia got hurt and it was 7-13 and it was my turn to serve. I served 10 aces in a row and then it was 17-13 our team up. My team wound up losing that match 27-25 but we played really hard and went into the 3rd match and fought and lost 15-13. We won the two games the following day and came in 4th in the tournament because of losing that one game. My coach and my parents told me how proud they were of me because I lead the team both on the court and in our hearts. I am pretty proud of myself too!

  • Exact Showcase
  • I loved going to this event because at my high school I really do not have hitters or middles to set that are taller than me ( I am the tallest on my team) and I was able to run some amazing plays with the other girls at the showcase and I learned from college coaches so I could get critical feedback to help me get better.
